It is not uncommon that individuals with diabetes and kidney failure suffer from disorders of the brain. This condition is called diabetic or nephrogenic neuropathy (neuropatia). When the nervous system is affected, it must be urgently attended to. This is because the nerve cells are one a group of cells that are fragile and cannot handle insults for a very long time.
There are therefore some certain therapies that have been used in times past with varying level of successes. They are:
• Controlling blood sugar
Most of the cases of the peripheral nerve damage result from diabetes. This is actually caused by the high level of sugar in the blood; and is prolonged. If the time is still very short and the damage to the nerve is not significant. If the level of blood sugar is controlled, the tingling in the hands (formigamentonas mãos) can easily be corrected. It may resolve spontaneously or with a little help.
• Diet control
This is still in a bit to control the level of blood sugar. Too much of the carbohydrate diet should be avoided by these individuals. Low carbohydrate diet is good and food rich in fiber will provide the necessary support.
• Physical therapy and exercise
This is good for so many reasons. It helps to control weight and induces weight loss. It helps to keep body organs in optimal function. It reduces stress and cholesterol level in the body. Immune system is also boosted. Each time you exercise, you revive your body again and again. Ultimately, it helps to control the blood sugar level.
• Quit bad habits
Smoking is not only bad for the general health of the body. It does a great havoc to the nerves of the body. The chances of nerve damage and numbness in the hands (dormencianas mãos) are higher in smokers than in non-smokers. Alcohol, on the other hand, makes the body insensitive to low blood glucose.
